What is the difference between visits and hits? PDF Print E-mail
Ah, the age old question.

Hits - A hit is an electronic request of data from a website. Let's say you go to Amazon.com. When you go to their home page, this is probably about 30 hits or more. The reason is that there are several requests. Here are some examples of requests or hits:
  • Request for an image
  • Request for a style sheet
  • Request for a javascript page
  • Request for the page

Visits - A visit is when one person accesses a page on your website. Using the same example above. If you go to Amazon.com's home page, it will be only one visit.

So, the rule of thumb is to track the number of visits. The higher number of visits, the higher number of visitors to your site.
