Transferring a domain name can be a pain. The key to transferring is to just remember it may take several days. So, if you're looking to move quickly, it's not going to happen. If you're going to transfer a domain name, the most popular reasons are you're paying too much for your domain, switching web firms, or switching hosting. It is always a good practice to make sure you have good access to your domain name. We have seen some clients have many issues with companies holding their domains. If you want to check information on your domain, we recommend going to http://www.dnsstuff.com. Here you can enter your domain name (Example: Bluecreekweb.com) in the section at the bottom, in the middle, titled IP tests. Then find the IPWHOIS box and enter your domain name, and click the WHOIS button. This should bring up your information. If you want to transfer your domain to someone and are looking for a low cost solution, try using http://www.joeswebshack.com. Click on the navigation, "Domain Names", then choose "Transfer Domain". Follow the steps from there. So, how do I transfer the domain? Once you have found your new registrar, the company that can hold your domain, register to transfer your domain. Once selected and the process has started, an automatic email will be sent the the email address of the administrator of the domain name, that may be you. If you're not sure, check DNSStuff that was mentioned above. The first email sent to the domain administrator will have a transaction ID and transaction Key, hold on to this email. Next, request the Authorization code from your current registrar. This is the second important piece. Without this piece, you can't do anything. Once you have these three things, you can finalize the transfer. Log back in to your new domain name registrar and look for your new domain and see if there is a section to start the process. Start the process and enter the information gathered above, transaction ID, transaction Key, or Authorization Number (Also known as EPP). Once you have entered everything, you should be ok, no more emails are necessary. Now, all you have to do is wait, potentially a couple of days for it to complete. |
