How do I change my website's BV Themes? PDF Print E-mail

Changing BV Themes for your website is simple

  1. Log in as the administrator.
  2. In the top navigation, click on the "Settings" tab.
  3. In the left navigation, click on the "Themes" tab.
  4. Click on the "Select" button next to the theme you want.

For more information on how to create new themes, here is a discussion which may help:

BCW: ok. the look of the site is based on themes... we touched on that a little yesterday. on your system where you installed the new site, please look for the bvthemes directory. in there you should see some subdirectories

BCW: ok. typically, i try to find a theme that is similar to the old site. it makes it easier to code. the best way to do that is to look at the other themes and compare those to the old site....

BCW: once you pick a theme, copy the directory and rename it to something like... newsitetheme
developer: ok

BCW: if you want to see the other themes in action... we have to bring up the admin for your site

BCW: so, do you know how to go to the admin for your site?

BCW: it's always the [site]/bvadmin/login.aspx

BCW: a lot of times clients may remove the sign in so i just use this shortcut
developer: ok,i think by using the default username provided after using bvcommerce

BCW: yes, that should get you in... i think it's /password
developer: yes

BCW: k. login and take a look around.

BCW: there are several tabs at the top

BCW: yes i am in to that
developer: admindefault.aspx page

BCW: great

BCW: do you see all of the tabs?
developer: tabs means catalog ,content etc ?

BCW: correct...

BCW: a quick tour
developer: yes i see it

BCW: catalog is where you can configure the products and product categories... they will show up automatically in the navigation (categories will)

BCW: people. the people tab is where you can manage your visitors. you can send emails to theme, etc
developer: ok

BCW: the content tab is where you can edit the home page and what appears on the left hand side of the page with the navigation.. it's pretty neat... we'll touch on that when we're editing the home page

BCW: the orders tab is where you can manage orders, print lists, etc

BCW: reports, here you can run some simple reports

BCW: settings... this is typically where you can set some default information. here is also where you can change themes
developer: ok
developer: let me check for a minute

BCW: k. let me know when your ready and if you have any questions
developer: ok

BCW: ok.. in the settings tab, we'll start...
developer: ok

BCW: click on the tab... in that tab, you will see in the left hand nav the themes option.. click on that
BCW: you will see a couple of options. click on any of these options and the look of the entire site will change
BCW: yes ,it will changed on selection
BCW: note that the names that display in the tab are the directory names.. if you copy one of those directories, rename it, it will display here. that's how you change the themes
developer: ok ,i understand

BCW: so, that's one of the first tasks... i'd focus on matching the colors, links, etc. don't worrk too much about the layout just yet. but you can play with the header etc

BCW: to change the look and feel, you will work with the styles.css file in your bv theme directory
developer: yes, i will do it

BCW: once you start moving over the header, you'll have to move the pieces around such as the homepagecolumns, etc

BCW: you'll find that most of the sections have a stylesheet name. so it's easy to move things around....
developer: yes, of course

BCW: after you feel comfortable with link colors, text, etc, then walk through the checkout to make sure you found all of the links and colors. some may seem hidden.

BCW: ok... dependent on how that goes, we can start working on the home page. you ready to look at how that works?
developer: yes, sure

BCW: ok. there is a tab at the top called content
BCW: click on that
BCW: the first page that comes up is structured for the home page.
developer: ok
BCW: it's designed to have three columns.. but you don't have to use them all
BCW: you will see at the top that you can add new pieces.. like a category grid, HTML rotator, etc. play around with it to see  how it works... it's kind of neat
BCW: i'm guessing most of the home page will be an html rotator
developer: yes, i am doing it now
BCW: k. the html rotator confuses many. essentially, if you only have one html item in the rotator, it doesn' t rotate. so you can use it as a static piece
BCW: in the stylesheets, these sections are named homecolumn1, homecolumn2, etc
developer: ok,i will check it
BCW: also, on the left nav, you will see category page, product page.. these will help you to configure the left hand nav for those pages if you need it
